Some characteristics of cool weather-tolerant rice varieties in Yunnan Province, China

摘要: The present experiment was performed in Yunnan Province of China from 1993 to 1994, as a part of a joint research between Japan International Research Centre for Agricultural Sciences and Yunnan Academy of Agricultural Sciences to evaluate the coldweather tolerance of 7 new local varieties. Most of these local varieties were from the area where rice was cultivated at the highest altitude of about 2700 meters in Yunnan, and from an area where much rain during the flowering stage is considered to induce sterility in rice. The newly examined local varieties had extremely high cold tolerance at the booting stage, similar to the other cold-tolerant local varieties. All cold-tolerant local varieties had much longer culms, longer anthers and larger anther width than the Japanese varieties or the cultivars in Yunnan Province. Parental lines bred by the joint research had extremely high cold tolerance and short culms similar to Japanese varieties. In an experiment with 29 varieties differing in cold tolerance at the booting stage, a positive correlation was observed between the fertility in the paddy field irrigated with cold water and anther length (L), width (W) and their interaction.
